Annual Meeting 2007

HAI 2007

HAI 2007
Date: 19th, 20th, 21st October 2007
Venue:  Clarion Hotel, Sligo

President's Letter

It is a pleasure to welcome everyone to the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Haematology Association of Ireland at this excellent venue, the Clarion Hotel in Sligo. We are building on the continuing success of previous meetings by attracting more clinical haematologists, healthcare scientists, nurses and allied professionals across haematological practice.

This year we will have the privilege of hearing talks from a number of distinguished international speakers. Trevor Baglin, fresh from delivering the BSH Medal Lecture at Bournemouth will give a talk entitled -Venous thrombosis: patient-focussed or disease focussed-care?- We welcome two visitors from the United States: John Cunningham from Chicago will speak about sickle cell disease and Alan List from Tampa about myelodysplasia. John Gribben from Bart's has chosen the topic of lymphoma. From closer to home, Emer Lawlor will cover Haemovigilance and the EU Blood Directive and Ken Mills, recently appointed to the new Chair of Experimental Haematology at QUB will speak about the use of microarrays in the diagnosis of leukaemia. We eagerly anticipate hearing about the latest developments in these interesting topics.

As usual Posters and Free Communications will have a prominent place on the programme, providing an excellent opportunity to elicit views and comments from colleagues.

On a personal note, at the end of my term as President of the Association, I would like to thank Corrina McMahon our Secretary/Treasurer and Eibhlin Conneally our Scientific Secretary for their heroic efforts in organising the last three Annual Scientific Meetings, and the Committee Members who contributed through attendance at our increasingly efficient multicentre video link-ups. It has been a pleasure to serve the Association at this important time in its development.

At last year's AGM in Cork, members endorsed unanimously the recommendation of the Committee to seek Charitable Status as a Limited Company and voted formally on this in January of this year, again unanimously. The legal transactions are underway at present and we expect the process to be complete before the end of the year. Our new status underlines the sustained growth of the Association, which had its foundations in the Blood Club in the 1970's.

One of the most memorable events of my tenure was to attend the Meeting of the National Presidents at the European Hematology Association in Vienna in June. It is vitally important that as HAI continues to grow we should seek opportunities to play a greater role in EHA, an increasingly influential organisation.

I wish the HAI continued success in the future.
