Seed Funding & Travel Scholarships
2010 Scholarship Award Winners
Seed funding
Seed funding is aimed at providing investigators the
opportunity of producing preliminary data that will
then potentially lead to a full grant proposal. Applications
are encouraged from high quality projects being undertaken
in Ireland. Inter-institutional collaboration will be
an advantage but is not a prerequisite for applying.
Seed funding, of up to €10,000 will be available
to support start up costs including equipment and consumable
expenses for projects. It must not contribute to salary
costs. A brief scientific proposal must be submitted
and should consist of 1-2 pages (double spaced) containing
the following headings:
- Background of proposed project
- A clear hypothesis statement of 10 -100 words (max)
- Aims of project
- Plan of investigation
- Costing
- Collaborations
- Anticipated outcome
- Added value of the research to other related research
in Ireland
The committee may request further information from
the applicant. A biographical sketch (CV) of the applicant
and the academic supervisor (two A4 pages Max) must also accompany the
submission. A letter of support from the supervisor is mandatory.
Suitable applications include outline proposals from
candidates who wish to develop and validate a new technique,
acquire a new skill or run a pilot study as part of
a larger research strategy.
Applications may be submitted electronically to Sinead
Cassidy on sinead@sineadcassidy.com
who will channel all applications through to the Royal
College of Pathologists who are administering these
grants on behalf of the HAI.

travel for short-term study periods at international
centres of excellence. Applicants should demonstrate
that they would benefit from exposure to experimental
methods or ethos in a centre of excellence abroad. The

the home institution in Ireland (University, NHS, HSE
or research institute).
A report of the outcome from the seed funding and
travel scholarships must be presented at the annual
HAI meeting by the successful applicant. This report
must be received at abstract submission deadline at
the next meeting between 12 and 18 months after the
successful application. The report will be given in
a dedicated session of the HAI meeting and should indicate,
inter alia whether further funding has been secured
